Crean College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. In two national datasets, we found that gender was by far the strongest predictor of what people want in a long-term mate: it was more important than age, income, education, or confidence in appearance. Yet age also played a major factor in the research, which surveyed over 28, people.

Older people — both men and women — had weaker preferences across the board. One source of concern women have with their bodies is driven by concerns that men prefer slender women. I always notice guys working hard to get with a girl just because she is attractive, even if they do not know her personality at all.

But there may be another hidden advantage to your female companion, one rooted deep in our minds. Women seeking romantic partners seem to prefer men already chosen by another lady. But whether humans do it is more ambiguous. In theory , going after men who are taken has its benefits. Biologists predict mate choice copying to occur when reproduction requires a lot from one sex — such as pregnancy, lactation and parenting — but not necessarily anything from the other beyond, say, insemination.

So, finding a high-quality mate is of greater consequence to the parent destined to rear the future offspring.

Metrics details. We find that for women, network measures of popularity and activity of the men they contact are significantly positively associated with their messaging behaviors, while for men only the network measures of popularity of the women they contact are significantly positively associated with their messaging behaviors. Thirdly, compared with men, women attach great importance to the socio-economic status of potential partners and their own socio-economic status will affect their enthusiasm for interaction with potential mates.

Further, we use the ensemble learning classification methods to rank the importance of factors predicting messaging behaviors, and find that the centrality indices of users are the most important factors. Finally, by correlation analysis we find that men and women show different strategic behaviors when sending messages. Compared with men, for women sending messages, there is a stronger positive correlation between the centrality indices of women and men, and more women tend to send messages to people more popular than themselves.

A scientific presentation of mating intelligence, which is a new concept in evolutionary biology in a similar vein to emotional intelligence, or social intelligence.

This book examines the American system of dating, mate choice, and marriage. It analyzes a wide range of established ideas about how dating and mate choice are changing, and identifies changes and continuities in premarital experiences in twentieth century America. A variety of ideas about what sorts of dating and premarital experiences will make for a successful marriage are tested and for the most part disproven, raising serious doubts about our fundamental assumption that dating experience helps individuals make a “wise” choice for a future mate.

Marital success turns out to depend not so much on premarital experiences or on the social background characteristics of couples such as race, religion, and social class as on the way in which couples structure their day-to-day marital life together. Through its detailed examination of a wide range of ideas and predictions about dating, mating, and marriage, and through its dramatic findings, Dating, Mating, and Marriage challenges many previous assumptions and conclusions about the fate of American marriage and elevates our knowledge of the American system of mate choice to a higher level.

In courtship and display, sexual competition and rivalry, we are also guided by what Glenn Geher and Scott Barry Kaufman call Mating Intelligence –a range of mental abilities that have evolved to help us find the right partner. Mating Intelligence is at work in our efforts to form, maintain, and end relationships. It guides us in flirtation, foreplay, copulation, finding and choosing a mate, and many other behaviors. In Mating Intelligence Unleashed , psychologists Geher and Kaufman take readers on a fascinating tour of the crossroads of mating and intelligence, drawing on cutting-edge research on evolutionary psychology, intelligence, creativity, personality, social psychology, neuroscience, and more.

The authors show that despite what you may read in the latest issue of Maxim, Playboy, Vogue , or GQ , physical attractiveness isn’t the whole story.

Evolutionary explanations of human behavior have produced many new insights, but also much resistance. This essay examines 2 books on sex differences written with very different approaches. Rosemary Hopcroft’s Evolution and Gender argues that men and women can be both equal and different and that average biological differences between the sexes, which are often small, do not threaten the ideal of political equality. In Hopcroft’s view, understanding these differences with the help of evolutionary theory is a condition for the realization of equality, not an obstacle.

While Evolution and Gender gives a concise and representative view of current evolutionary research on sex differences, Inferior claims that obsessions pervade entire research areas.

Before we start, a disclaimer: no one can accurately predict the future. Not astrologers, not algorithms, not science-fiction writers. That said, everything you read here is likely to come true. Wearable devices will match you on thousands of choice filters with an optimized date, making the app-swipe decision seem laborious.

Customized personal digital assistants will guide your conversation based on your taste, preference and interest data, possibly running your entire courtship banter through autocomplete. Date-rating apps and social whisper networks will help identify predators and flag scammers. This might sound like a dystopian future when you read it now, but there will actually be more communication, and a far more fine-tuned understanding of consent in courtship.

And when mixed-reality smart glasses or smart lenses become commonplace, the future becomes even more mind-boggling—will romance be played out as an augmented-reality video game? Will we be able to change or filter the way our partners look to us? How much control will we have over our sexual privacy settings? If you thought matching horoscopes was a big deal, wait till you meet the age of matching biometrics: your meeting with your intended other will take place under the watchful eye of your artificially intelligent matchmaker, not your family.

Prior research investigating the mate preferences of women and their parents reveals two important findings with regard to physical attractiveness. First, daughters more strongly value mate characteristics connoting genetic quality such as physical attractiveness than their parents. Second, both daughters and their parents report valuing characteristics other than physical attractiveness most strongly e.

We tested four hypotheses investigating whether a minimum level of physical attractiveness was a necessity to both women and their mothers and whether physical attractiveness was a more important determinant of dating desirability than trait profiles. These hypotheses were supported. Women and their mothers were strongly influenced by the physical attractiveness of the target men and preferred the attractive and moderately attractive targets.

Men with the most desirable personality profiles were rated more favorably than their counterparts only when they were at least moderately attractive. Unattractive men were never rated as more desirable partners for daughters, even when they possessed the most desirable trait profiles. We conclude that a minimum level of physical attractiveness is a necessity for both women and their mothers and that when women and their parents state that other traits are more important than physical attractiveness, they assume potential mates meet a minimally acceptable standard of physical attractiveness.
